Scotland's national museum of coal mining at the Victorian Lady Victoria Colliery, Newtongrange — a remarkably intact colliery with Scotland's largest surviving steam engine. Free guided tours take you through the life of a miner.
20 minutes south of Edinburgh at Newtongrange. Free entry (donations welcome). Open Tue–Sun. Guided tour included in free entry — check times on arrival. Good for school-age children interested in history.
